Rustic Brides Rock

A Hidden Gem

A shoot with a difference.

It has been a really busy summer for Pastel Designs, preparing and delivering orders for my lovely couples. I have only had chance to fit in two shoots. Ths is the first, our ‘Rustic Brides Rock.

My grown to love friends Colin and Lou who own the Old Milking
Parlour at Cavoky had an idea for a shoot with a difference. One that was just a group of supplier friends having fun! We didn’t really have a firm plan except that it had to involve smoke bombs!

With ideas flowing we pulled together a fantastic shoot and we have just been featured on Brides blog.

Here is my thoughts on stationery for the shoot.

I designed the stationery to complement the ethos of the shoot. When I saw that smoke was on the agenda, I instantly thought I had to include movement in the design somehow. Using a marbled and watercolour effect on the designs I thought that this would encompass movement on a flat design. I also made a cake topper which was used as a sign on a mirrored board to make a statement.

Lou had just come up with her own individual hastag of #rusticbridesrock I just thought it would be so cool to feature it in some way!

Working closely with the team, we were able to get the colours flowing throughout the day. If you are a follower of my designs you will know that I love creating bespoke stationery is a passion of mine.

As you will see from the image have a signature must have photos! With the cake (perfection cake and stationery) and the bride holding! I managed another on this shoot, floating next to a lily!

The Story behind the shoot

Colin and Lou – Old Milking Parlour

“This shoot came about after a chance conversation on a wedding suppliers Facebook page with Greg Thurtle from TP Photography. We mentioned that we had always wanted to combine smoke grenades in a photoshoot at our venue. Greg has oodles of experience in using smoke within his photography so when he agreed to join us we were super excited.”

The Old Milking Parlour at Cavokay House is a barn wedding venue set in 12 acres of beautiful land including paddocks and woodland on the Somerset/Dorset border. It’s a DIY venue which means couples can style their day so that it reflects their tastes exactly. The rustic nature of the venue, with its beautiful woodland lends itself perfectly to the unconventional, bohemian style images created in this photoshoot.

Greg –  TP Photography

“As a fun-loving wedding photographer, I’ve always wanted to experiment more with smoke grenades. Having a talented team of suppliers alongside me allowed me to have fun and create some amazing images.”

Sue – Old Chapel Flowers

“My aim was to create a natural, midsummer feel using all Dorset-grown seasonal blooms picked within 48 hours of the shoot. The flowers included dahlias, echinops, burgundy poppies, ammi, white helichrysum, dark toned cosmos and vivid blue cornflowers alongside annual grasses, blue and green foliage and poppyseed heads. The flowers were all in-keeping with the stunning English countryside grounds of The Old Milking Parlour at Cavokay House.”

Kayleigh – Exclusively Yours Bridal Boutique

“With the dress, I wanted to show the versatility of having a detachable skirt and how you can achieve two totally different looks without having to break the bank and buy two dresses, as so many brides tend to do. The Ella Rosa dress is a timeless classic which works perfectly with the tuile skirt.

Mel – Bournemouth Bridal Hair & Make-Up

“When clients book me for their bridal hair and make-up, I always ask if there is anything about their dress they would like to show off or if they have a headpiece or a particular colour scheme they would like me to follow. This helps to create a bespoke look to enhance their natural beauty and create their desired look. With this shoot, Tessa’s stunning headpiece with its gold and navy butterfly inspired me to create a gold smoky eye with wispy delicate lashes like butterfly wings and tousled beach waves. When everything came together it showed off the headpiece perfectly on Abbey’s hair and it looked fantastic with the dress.

Alison – Rag Tags

“I chose a blue suit from the Cameron Ross slim-fit collection for this photoshoot. It is available as a three-piece tails or short jacket and comes in a contemporary grey and an elegant navy too.”

Tessa – Tessa’s Tiaras

“I wanted to achieve three things with my tiara accessory – I wanted it to be different and bold while embracing the beautiful natural surroundings of The Old Milking Parlour at Cavokay House. I also wanted to ensure it was easy for Mel to attach into Abbey’s hair whether she decided to style her hair up or down and lastly it was important to me to incorporate and complement the bouquet and stationery.”

Natasha – Tasha Mae Events

We kept the décor of our shoot to a minimum as we wanted to focus on the bride and groom and of course, the smoke. However, we had been given some hazel sticks by a friend and we couldn’t resist building a tipi which we think worked really well with the bohemian vibe of the day. It’s also a really simple thing for couples to create themselves and, dressed up or down, is an eminently achievable prop to include for fun pictures.

The only other main prop we used was our cake swing on which our couples love to showcase their cake. To keep within our shoot styling, instead of hanging it inside we hung the cake from the Hawthorn tree on the lawn. Not only did this look fantastic, it also added to the boho vibe we were aiming to create.

Melanie – Melanie Todd Cake Design

“I wanted to create a wedding cake that totally encompassed the theme of the shoot. By working closely with Charlotte who produced the stationery, I designed a wedding cake highlighting a modern marbling technique with a metallic paint splatter effect. I really wanted to use the element of a smoke grenade on the cake so I used sponges and edible paints to get the smoky look. The cake was finished with delicate but dramatic sugar flowers.”
